It’s a much beloved program, TestDisk and Photorec.  The program is a gem of freeware that computer techs have long loved.  Most are familiar with the Photorec side of the software.  It’s a simple command terminal based program that with a few commands is able to scan and find deleted files and folders.  Even if the file is long gone, it’s able to do raw file carving like no other program.  It comes fully preloaded with a plethora of common file types it can recognized simply by the raw data.  So even if it’s impossible to find the file in the file tables, a full scan can often find it in the hard drive data area.

Nose to nose with even some expensive commercial products testdisk is able to often outperform in the sheer number of files it can recover.  I’ve seen cases where it found hundreds and even thousands of files that other expensive software missed.  That’s not to say it’s a one size fits all data recovery suite, either.  If you’re looking for more advanced features like RAID rebuilding you’ll have to continue looking.  Perhaps a title like R-Studio would be a better fit.  But for the typical user who just deleted something by accident it should be your first go to software.  Best of all, it’s free!! And that’s why it’s on this site.

The other less known part of the product is the actual program Testdisk.  Among its most outstanding features is the ability to scan for and find lost partitions.  Not only can it find these partitions, but it’s able to then restore them to their proper places in the MBR or GPT tables.  There’s been a number of times where a simple corrupted MBR was the cause of a non-booting system.  A quick scan using a live rescue CD, and bam! partition table restored and booting as usual.

Give it a whirl today!
